Ways To Embrace This Change of Season
Simple ways to enjoy the process of the seasons changing in nature and at home that will make you learn more about yourself
For those reading in the southern hemisphere, it has become Spring 🌼 time, and for those in the North, it is Autumn 🍂 my intention behind this article is why embracing seasons is important for all of us to connect to our homes and nature.
LET PAUSE + CONNECT before continuing to read…
Let’s get our favourite essential oil if you have them and rub a drop on your hands 🙌🏾 (Peppermint is my go-to right now as my allergies have blocked my nose a bit, and it provides the only relief for me). Rub them together and exhale that beautiful oil, holding your hands to your face (avoid eyes). Repeat this three times to allow yourself a moment of slowness, even if this is the only moment you take today to connect to your breath intentionally… I’m happy you have done just that.
Now, back to this article, like nature, we as humans go through phases/seasons; you can say that adapting to change is not only important but essential for us to learn and feel that we are ever-changing. As adults, we may not see ourselves change physically, emotionally or even mentally as we age because we get caught up in the mundane tasks of life and feel like our “normal lives,” nothing major is significantly happening. But we are changing whether we realise it consciously or not. The more we can get in touch with change and learn to be adaptable, the more our minds will stay sharp and clear as we age, our bodies will grow to accept our physical change and our hearts and spirits will thrive with loving life more because we will stop resisting change but become friends with it and comforted when noticed.
I love both these seasons, but I will share ways for both as I know readers come from all over the world, and I’ll do my best to relate to both, especially since I come from the North!
Embracing the seasons is a wonderful way to stay connected to Mother Earth! Witnessing nature change is a beautiful way to feel more connected to the environment and her work's slow pace. It’s amazing how nature always manages to achieve so much growth throughout the seasons. She truly shows us how slow living truly works wonders in this fast pace environment of technology and information age has become.
Here are some simple ways to enjoy the process of the seasons changing in nature and at home as we have to physically change our homes' spaces to suit the new weather patterns that are shifting outside.
At home
Decluttering our home
For this Spring, I am focused on decluttering our home to make our small home feel more spacious. Reason one is we have another mini human joining our home, so it is less “stuff” for me to organise around the house.
2. Deep clean 🧼
helps you notice everything around the house and appreciate the pieces you have kept in your home and lifestyle, perhaps stopping you from needing to buy more.
3. Changing the wardrobe
is always a fun part of the seasons; it’s putting layers away and bringing out the lighter and brighter colours in your wardrobe or adding layers to your closet to keep it warmer.
4. Add a new essential oil in your diffuser
or scent to the candle you burn to help invite this change in season for you. Essential oils have aroma have emotional effects to help set the mood for your environment
Spring - 💧 lemon, 💧 orange, 💧💧 grapefruit 💧lime
Autumn - 💧💧 cedarwood, 💧💧 frankincense, 💧💧💧 wild orange
5. Energy cleanse
I love when people on socials have to explain spirituality or call things “hippie” or “woo woo” not to make things sound less serious than the word spiritual might be taken. Spirituality is beautiful; however, you want to define it for yourself as it means differently for all of us. I use a sage smudge stick or Palo Santo in our home. Or I make my own with fresh herbs like rosemary or olive tree leaves and dry it out after you have wrapped it. Check out how I DIY my own smudge stick
In nature
1. Start planting some seedlings 🌱 for a veggie garden
or some flowers in pot plants. If you don’t have room outside, you can do an herb garden in your kitchen window or buy an air-purifying plant.
(Last year, we turned our front yard into a veggie patch, and it was so much fun to watch it grow.)
(I can’t wait to plant again and watch it grow as I still have lots to learn so bugs don’t eat all my veggies this year)
2. Walk around the neighbourhood
And notice three things in your mind that make you feel the season is changing.
Example:
In Spring, you notice the cherry blossoms on the trees, warmth from the sun and the smell of fresh flowers.
In Autumn, you notice the colours changing on the trees, the coolness of the air, and how everyone is wearing jackets
3. Go fruit picking
My favourite place is to go into the strawberry fields in the springtime
Maybe for Autumn, it is to visit a pumpkin patch to find the best pumpkin for Halloween.
Have a picnic
At any season, it is one of my favourite things to do. Grab your favourite blanket and a simple dish or a takeaway, and enjoy being outdoors watching the sunset or just as the day passes.
Go for a hike
Find a new trial that suits the season to see what’s growing or falling in a spot you have never been to. This helps you feel like your world is expanding when it’s unfamiliar. I did this when I first moved to Perth to see new places and decided to do Yoga Hikes. It was so fun doing yoga in nature.
So, in the end, slowing down and embracing the changes that happen at the beginning of a season in our homes and nature provides us with an opportunity to start something new or to make adjustments in our existing lives to suit our needs.
We notice and appreciate the simple pleasures in life that are always on offer if we slow down to notice them in our homes and nature.
I hope this article inspires you to do one of the few things above to feel more connected with the season changing and how you have changed since the last season. Change is part of life, yet we resist it because our minds cannot adjust or adapt fast enough. But I have grown to learn that we can adapt, and we do every season. We don’t acknowledge it because we are not paying attention to the small ways we are. I hope these simple methods that you can try at home or outside help you the way they have helped me notice the change in my simple life and how they have brought me joy and peace.
Recently, I have decluttered a lot of my stuff to make space for the arrival of our next son, as I mentioned before, and it has helped me feel more at home overall. I also planted sunflower seeds this week in the garden, and I am super excited to watch them grow tall in our front yard this year. There is so much to look forward to this season, as I plan to do all of the above more regularly to embrace slowing down this season but also to learn more about how these simple actions can make tiny shifts in my overall health because I’m connecting more to my environment and less to the fast pace world of screens, technology and overload of information. By practising slow down, my overall wellness feels more expansive and frees up space in my life not to do more but to enjoy doing less.
